Modular Imaging Suites for CT, MRI, and PET/CT

purpose-built, relocatable structures

Our modular imaging suites give you a fully configured, surface-level, CT, MRI, or PET/CT environment — on your site, built around your workflow. Every suite is different because every program is different.

What Is a Modular Imaging Suite?

A modular imaging suite is a self-contained imaging facility. Factory-built and delivered to your site, it gets placed on grade, connected to your facility’s utilities, and put to work. It is not a mobile coach operating on a shared schedule. It is also not a construction project with a 12 to 24 month runway. It occupies the space between those two options: a permanent-feeling, clinically capable imaging environment that stays on your site for as long as you need it.

Each suite is configured specifically for the modality and program it supports. There is no standard off-the-shelf version, because no two programs have the same needs.

Mobile, Modular, and In-House

It helps to think about imaging infrastructure as a spectrum.

Mobile Imaging

Mobile imaging gives you maximum flexibility. Shared access, rotating schedules, equipment that goes where it’s needed. SMS has operated mobile imaging programs for decades, and mobile remains the right answer for a wide range of clinical and financial situations.

Modular Imaging

Modular imaging suites occupy the space in between. More permanent than a mobile program and more patient-experience-focused than a coach environment. Faster and more capital-efficient than new construction. And because the suite stays on your site, your team owns the schedule, the workflow, and the patient relationship.

In-House

In-house construction gives you permanence and full facility integration. It also requires capital, long timelines, and a fixed commitment to that footprint.

One thing worth stating plainly: mobile is more easily relocated than modular. Moving a mobile coach is a logistics call. Moving a modular suite, especially one housing a high-field MRI, is a more involved process. Modular offers long-term flexibility compared to a permanent building, but it is not a substitute for the day-to-day portability that mobile provides. We offer both because they serve different needs.

Three Modalities, Configured to Your Program

SMS modular imaging suites are available in CT, MRI, and PET/CT. Each modality has different structural, shielding, and workflow requirements, so each suite is specified accordingly.

Modular CT Imaging Suite

CT suites are among the most flexible modular configurations we offer. The layout options are broad, site requirements are generally straightforward, and the suite can be tailored for high-throughput diagnostic work, trauma support, oncology, or general radiology. Radiation safety construction is standard throughout.

Interiors are fully customizable. Some clients want a clean, clinical look. Others want large wall murals and natural light features that put patients at ease the moment they walk in.

What a CT suite typically includes:

  • High-slice CT scanner compatibility
  • Radiation-shielded scan room
  • Dedicated control room with direct sightline to the scanner
  • Custom flooring and interior finish options
  • Wall murals and natural light features
  • Integrated HVAC
  • ADA-compliant accessibility

Modular MRI Imaging Suite

MRI suites require a more precise build. The scan room incorporates multilayer RF shielding, shielded doors and windows, MR-compliant lighting, and an HVAC system specified for the environmental conditions MRI demands. SMS modular MRI suites support configurations up to 3T, including wide-bore options.

The patient environment matters here more than in almost any other modality. Wide pathways, calming interiors, and large murals do real clinical work. They reduce anxiety, support patient stillness, and ultimately affect image quality. We think about the interior of a modular MRI suite the same way a well-designed fixed-site room does.

What a MRI suite typically includes:

  • Scanner configurations up to 3T, including wide-bore
  • Multilayer RF shielding throughout
  • Double-shielded doors and windows with sound insulation
  • MR-compliant lighting and power supplies
  • Dedicated control room with leaded glass scan window
  • Changing room and patient prep area
  • HVAC specified for MRI environmental requirements
  • ADA-compliant accessibility

Modular PET/CT Imaging Suite

PET/CT is the most workflow-complex configuration we offer. Full nuclear medicine workflow needs more than a scan room and a control room. It needs space for radiopharmaceutical handling, patient uptake, and the radiation safety infrastructure that governs all of it. SMS modular PET/CT suites are built for that complete workflow. Each suite includes a shielded hot lab, uptake rooms with lead-shielded walls and lead-lined doors, and a control room.

What a PET/CT suite typically includes:

  • Integrated hot lab
  • Uptake rooms with lead-shielded walls and lead-lined doors
  • Lead shielding throughout, scaled to PET/CT requirements
  • Control room with shielded window
  • Lockable cabinetry for isotope storage and phantom containers
  • Zoned HVAC for scan room, control, and uptake areas
  • ADA-compliant accessibility
