Scaling PET/CT Coverage for a Growing Health Network

A rapidly growing health system needed an efficient way to increase diagnostic imaging capacity. To support scaling PET/CT coverage, Shared Medical Services created a tailored mobile imaging strategy. The program expanded availability from 1.5 to 2.5 days per week at high-demand sites, making it easier for patients to access timely care.

In addition, a flexible staffing model was introduced. The health system could shift between co-staffing and full SMS technologist support based on real-time patient volume. This approach improved resource allocation and helped prevent downtime.

To further strengthen the program, SMS launched local marketing and physician engagement initiatives. These efforts boosted referrals and improved appointment flow. At the same time, standardized workflows were rolled out across all participating sites, ensuring smooth integration and consistent service delivery.

This solution successfully enabled the provider to expand imaging access while maintaining efficiency. Appointment bottlenecks were reduced, and scan volumes increased. Because of the adaptable staffing model, the provider responded quickly to changes in demand without overextending resources. As a result, the health system achieved a scalable, patient-focused model for PET/CT growth, with operational consistency across all locations.
